Education Activities

The educational component of this project includes the mentoring and training of undergraduate and graduate students in molecular genetics, statistical genetics and genomics, with emphasis on outstanding women and underrepresented minority students. The students will be able to perform cutting edge genomics research in our Genomics and Bioinformatics Laboratory. The students will also have access to shared equipment in other molecular biology laboratories in the Department of Dairy and Animal Science and The Life Sciences Consortium at Penn State University. The educational component of this project also includes the teaching of these courses:

  • Applied Statistics for Biological Sciences, designed for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Topics in Statistical Genetics and Genomics, designed for graduate students.
  • AN SC 590 Colloquium in Animal Science, designed for graduate students.

By integrating research and education activities into laboratory and classroom teaching, this project will offer opportunities for training in molecular genetics, statistical genetics and genomics to undergraduate and graduate students as well as in the skills of critical thinking and scientific enquiry. These science disciplines are essential for performing cutting edge molecular genetics and genomics research to determine the genetic and molecular basis of variation for complex diseases in agricultural animal species and humans.
