I am currently involved
in the teaching of these courses:
The course is designed for Graduate students enrolled in the Departments of Dairy and Animal Science and Poultry Science as an informal weekly meeting to cover topics and issues that are relevant to the graduate program in Animal Sciences.
This course will introduce concepts on population/quantitative genetics and statistical methods to map genes and quantitative trait loci (QTL) for complex quantitative traits in non-experimental populations including farm animals and humans. This course will focus in the use of identical-by-descent (IBD)-based variance components methods of linkage analyses. For farm animals, we will cover linkage analysis methods developed under a regression, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian framework using full-sib and half-sib families. For human populations we will cover univariate and multivariate linkage analysis using full-sib nuclear families and extended pedigrees. The goal of this course is to provide genetic concepts and statistical methods to design a genome research for mapping genes and QTL for complex quantitative traits in non-experimental populations including farm animals and humans. Emphasis will be placed on applications of linkage analysis computer programs using simulated or published data. The major topics to cover will include introductory population and quantitative genetics, recombination fraction and genetic linkage, mapping functions, genetic linkage maps, linkage disequilibrium, types of quantitative traits and DNA markers, and methods of linkage and linkage disequilibrium analyses. Other new breakthrough topics with relevance to genome research will be discussed.
The course is designed for animal science, agronomy, forestry, food science, and other biology science students to cover topics on probability distribution theory, hypothesis testing, power of study design, analysis of variance, linear regression analysis, correlation and covariance analysis, and experimental designs. |
